Career Guide: How to Become a Quant Researcher in India
The demand for "Quants" in India is exploding. From HFT firms in Gurgaon to sophisticated prop desks in Mumbai and Bangalore, the hunt for talent is on. But what does it actually take to break in?
1. Validated Skills overdegrees
While a degree from an IIT/NIT/BITS in CS, Math, or Statistics is a great door-opener, it is not the only path. We value demonstrable skills:
- Coding: Python (Pandas, NumPy) and C++ (for execution systems).
- Math: Probability, Linear Algebra, and Time-Series Analysis.
- Finance: Understanding derivatives (Options Greeks, Futures pricing).
2. The Portfolio Project
Don't just send a CV. Send a GitHub link. Build a backtester from scratch. Scrape data and analyze a specific market anomaly. Show us you have the "hacker" mindset—the ability to find solutions without hand-holding.
3. Recommended Reading List
If you want to impress in an interview, read these:
- "Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives" by John Hull (The Bible).
- "Algorithmic Trading" by Ernie Chan.
- "Advances in Financial Machine Learning" by Marcos Lopez de Prado (Advanced).
